A Milestone in Energy Project Excellence
Prysmian Group, a global leader in energy and telecommunication cable systems, has been honored with the gold prize at the IPMA (International Project Management Association) Global Project Excellence Awards 2024. The award, presented in Cape Town on November 29, recognizes Prysmian’s Viking Link Project in the Energy Projects category for Large- & Mega-Sized Projects. This groundbreaking project represents the world’s longest onshore and offshore HVDC interconnector, bridging the UK and Denmark.
The Viking Link Project: A Vision of Sustainability
Awarded in 2019 by National Grid and Energinet, the Viking Link Project reflects a monumental achievement in energy infrastructure. Spanning a total length of 1,400 km, the project required expert design, manufacturing, and installation of 1,250 km of submarine cables and 135 km of land cables on the UK’s side.
After years of meticulous development, Prysmian achieved the installation and HV testing milestones by September 2023. The interconnector is set to facilitate the exchange of renewable energy between the UK and Denmark. Its benefits include supporting each country’s net-zero carbon goals, reducing electricity costs in the UK, and enhancing the reliability of the energy system.
IPMA: Celebrating Global Project Management Excellence
Established in 1965, the IPMA is a federation comprising over 75 member associations that aim to recognize exceptional achievements in project and program management. Its annual Global Project Excellence Awards attract world-renowned contenders from various industries.
Prysmian’s Viking Link triumph follows its third-place finish five years ago for the CWA 50Hz project in the same Mega Project category. This gold medal success in 2024 highlights the company’s advancement and commitment to continuous improvement amidst a highly competitive energy sector.
Leadership Insights: Building a Legacy of Project Excellence
Riccardo Fabbri, Prysmian’s Head of Project and Contract Management, emphasized the significance of Viking Link:
“This project has been long in the making. We’ve strategically refined our processes based on the lessons learned from CWA 50Hz. Viking Link represents the culmination of years of dedication in project management.”
Meanwhile, Giuseppe Cardamone, Project Director of Viking Link, reflected on the honor from IPMA:
“Receiving the gold medal is a testament to our excellence and drive for innovation. It not only enhances our brand image and business opportunities but ultimately sets a new benchmark for the industry, marking the beginning of a perpetual improvement process.”
Conclusion: Paving the Way for a Sustainable Future
The Viking Link Project and Prysmian’s recognition at the IPMA Awards symbolize a commitment to innovation, sustainability, and high standards in energy infrastructure. This achievement reaffirms Prysmian’s role as a crucial player in facilitating a greener and more interconnected world.
